PIMCO Dynamic Income Fund: I'd Wait A Few Months

The last time I wrote about the PIMCO Dynamic Income Fund, I gave it pretty bullish coverage. As a bond fund, PDI can really gain from interest rate hikes, provided you buy after the hiking is done.

PDI And PTY: Unwelcome ROC, Buyer Beware

Unbeknownst to many investors, PIMCO's big-yield funds, PDI and PTY, have sometimes included a significant return of capital in their beloved big distributions (made opaque through derivative swaps transactions). We reached out to PIMCO for comment, and communicate their replies in this article. Some of those comments caused us concern.

The Near-Perfect Portfolio: Sleep Well During Turbulent Times

The stock market is inherently volatile. With the economy going through the boom and bust cycles more frequently, the extreme ups and downs of the market are inevitable. For most conservative investors, especially retirees, it's very difficult to tolerate large and deep drawdowns. However, it is almost impossible to avoid these issues with index investing.

My Income Portfolio: A Stairway To Heaven

As in Led Zeppelin's famous song, for me, investments in high-dividend securities represent a kind of stairway to heaven. Indeed, their steady flow of money relieves psychological pressure during times of market uncertainty and helps me experience them with greater peace of mind.

PIMCO CEF Update: Rolling Horror Show

We provide a January update for the PIMCO CEF taxable suite. Taxable and Muni funds continued to deleverage in January despite rising NAVs - in effect PIMCO is deleveraging over and above what is already done by NAVs.

CEF Report February 2023 | The January Effect Didn't Disappoint

The January Effect boosted the valuation of most areas of the closed-end fund market. Taxable bond CEFs have rallied strongly while leaving munis behind. We think this is an opportunity for investors for 2023, as credit spreads are likely to widen, dragging down taxable bond NAVs. We favor munis and high-quality taxables.

PDI: Not The Time To Take On Credit Risk

The 13% yield on the PIMCO Dynamic Income Fund is impressive, but its use of leverage and exposure to weak credit quality leaves the fund susceptible to downside risks. The fund tends to move more in line with equities rather than UST prices, which has seen the PDI outperform long-term USTs by almost 200% since the Covid crash.
